About Us

Our Mission

At Hometown History Maps, our mission is to ensure America’s hidden map history isn’t buried in archives, but preserved and enjoyed in homes, schools, businesses, and communities across the country.

Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps were once created to assess fire risk — today, they’re priceless snapshots of America’s past. While libraries and archives preserve them for researchers, we bring them back to life as ready-to-frame, high-quality prints for your home, office, or as a one-of-a-kind gift.

We're building the first and only nationwide online store dedicated to all publicly available Sanborn map reprints — drawing from the Library of Congress collection and making them easy to search by state, city, and year — so you can find your exact hometown as it looked 100 years ago. No digging through archives. No downloading files. Just beautifully restored, historically accurate maps delivered to your door.

Because we believe in preserving the past, one map at a time.

Our Story...

It all started with a dusty, wrinkly, taped together old map my friend picked up at a local auction — a Sanborn Fire Insurance Map of our small hometown. At first, it was just curiosity. But as we unfolded the faded paper and studied the incredible detail, I realized I was holding a piece of our town's past — a time capsule showing what stood where, who lived there, and what our community looked like generations ago.

From that moment on, I was hooked.

After some digging, I discovered that thousands of towns — large and small — across the U.S. were once hand-drawn and meticulously recorded on these maps, originally created for fire insurance purposes. They showed everything from churches and opera houses to saloons and blacksmith shops, and even the long-lost bowling alley we apparently had back in 1908 (yes, really).

Pretty soon, I was showing friends, family, and anyone who’d listen. I quickly became the “Did You Know?” guy — “Did you know there used to be a Doctor's office right next to City Hall?” — and I haven’t shut up since.

That passion led me to create this business — Hometown History Maps — with a simple goal: to bring these amazing historical documents back to life and into homes, offices, and local businesses across the country. They're not just maps. They’re stories, memories, and conversation starters — and always, a source of hometown pride.

Where the Maps Come From

Most of the Sanborn Maps we offer come directly from the Library of Congress (LOC) — a free and public historical archive. I don’t hide that. My job isn’t to claim credit for the maps — it’s to do the hard work of locating your specific town and offering high-quality printed versions ready to hang and display with pride.

Quality That Honors the Past

We tested a variety of materials, and after trial and error, we landed on a professional-grade 7.9 mil Satin photo paper. It’s got just the right light gloss for rich contrast and a bright finish without being overly shiny — perfect for indoor settings like homes, offices, libraries, or gift shops.

Paper Specs:

  • Weight: 7.9 mil heavy-bond photo paper
  • Finish: Satin (semi-gloss), bright and vibrant
  • Performance: Indoor display longevity rated at 30 to 200 years, depending on lighting conditions — so this is a keepsake that lasts

Frame Sizes

Most of our Sanborn map prints are optimized to fit a standard 24" x 30" frame, available at most craft or frame stores. Other map styles or custom prints may vary slightly, so be sure to check the size listed on each product page.

More Than Decor — It’s a Story

Every map is a little window into what once was. Whether you're buying one for your living room, office, or as a gift for a fellow history buff, I hope it sparks curiosity and conversation the way it did for me.

Thanks for supporting a small business that believes in preserving history, celebrating hometowns, and keeping the stories alive — one map at a time.

Let’s find yours.
